Dr. Timnit Gebru is the is the founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (DAIR), an interdisciplinary and global AI research institute rooted in the belief that AI is not inevitable, its harms are preventable, and when its production and deployment include diverse perspectives and deliberate processes it can be beneficial. In this episode, she and Hilary discuss how an inclusive and collaborative approach to creating AI systems can address the uneven benefits and harmful impacts of technology on society.

Dr. Timnit Gebru is the founder and executive director of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research (DAIR) Institute . Prior to that, she was co-lead of the Ethical AI research team at Google, where she was fired in December 2020 for raising issues of discrimination in the workplace. She received her PhD from Stanford University and was a postdoc with Microsoft Research’s FATE (Fairness Accountability Transparency and Ethics in AI) group, where she studied algorithmic biases and the ethical implications of projects aimed at gaining insights from data. Timnit also cofounded Black in AI, a nonprofit that works to increase the presence, inclusion, visibility, and health of Black people working in AI, and is on the board of AddisCoder, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching algorithms and computer programming to Ethiopian high school students, free of charge.
Hilary Pennington is the executive vice president of the Ford Foundation, where she oversees all of Ford’s programs globally and works closely across programs and offices to ensure strategic, meaningful, and well-aligned global grantmaking. She also oversees the foundation’s BUILD and Global Fellowship programs and the Office of Strategy and Learning. From 2013-2017, she served as the foundation’s vice president for Education, Creativity, and Free Expression. Prior to joining Ford, Hilary led the Postsecondary Success strategy and U.S. Special Initiatives at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Generations Initiative. For 20 years, she led Jobs for the Future, a nationally recognized organization she co-founded that works to advance economic and educational opportunity.
